For the Association of Career and Technical Education (ACTE) Design contest, I was tasked with creating a trophy submission that followed three basic requirement's: the trophy must display the ACTE logo, must have a flat surface, and is no larger than 10" x 6" x 6".
For my design, I was inspired by the ideas of unity and togetherness. So, I decided early on I wanted to create a design similar to a paper people chain. As such, I knew I would have to design a simple person figure in CAD, which I had not done before. This was a very large challenge for me, as creating humanoid characters is not easy on a first attempt. However, utilizing many small parts, revolves, and lofts, I was able to create the design to the left.
The main structure of the trophy is comprised of two components: a large sphere and the ACTE logo. The logo was created by tracing the official ACTE logo, and then scaling the part to size in the assembly. The ball is inspired by Spaceship Earth, an attraction at the Walt Disney World Resort that speaks of language and connectiveness, a core value of ACTE.
Included in this design was the wooden base the theoretical trophy would be placed on. This was to ensure proper sizing of the model, and to complete the theoretical look.
With these two components put together, the trophy consists of four figures holding up the ball containing the ACTE logo. ACTE believes in creating an environment that elevates student growth to create a more competitive workforce. So, by having these four figures hold up the "globe", it represents the same message. While this design did not win the competition, the design process of creating the trophy allowed me to improve on my 3D modeling skills, and create a basic humanoid figure.
